Adding Photos to Family Members

December 20, 20252 min read

Make your family tree come alive with photos. Learn how to upload, crop, and manage photos for each family member.

Photos transform your family tree from a list of names into a visual journey through generations.

Uploading Your First Photo

To add a photo to a family member:

  1. Click on their card in the tree
  2. Select "Edit Details"
  3. Click the photo placeholder area
  4. Choose an image from your device
  5. Adjust the crop if needed
  6. Click "Save"

The photo will appear immediately on their card in the tree.

Supported File Formats

Friendictionary accepts all common image formats:

  • JPEG/JPG (most common)
  • PNG (great for scanned documents)
  • WebP (modern, efficient format)

Photo Size and Quality

Don't worry about image sizes - we handle that automatically. When you upload a photo:

  • Large images are automatically compressed
  • Photos are optimized for fast loading
  • Quality is preserved for viewing
  • Storage space is used efficiently

Upload high-quality originals, and we'll handle the rest.

Tips for Great Photos

For Living Relatives: Recent, clear photos where the face is easily visible work best. Good lighting and a simple background help.

For Historical Photos: Even old, faded photos work well. Scan them at the highest quality you can, and we'll display them beautifully.

Group Photos: If you have a group photo, consider cropping it to show each person individually for their profile.

Changing or Updating Photos

Found a better photo? Simply upload a new one and it will replace the old one. The process is the same as uploading the first time.

No Photo? No Problem

If you don't have a photo for someone, their card will display their initials with a color-coded background. The tree still looks great and remains easy to navigate.

Photo Privacy

Photos are only visible to people you've shared your tree with. They're stored securely and encrypted, just like all your other family data.

Adding photos is optional but highly recommended - they make your family tree more engaging and help younger generations connect with ancestors they may never have met.
